Success breeds success. Bowls and big wins help to bring more success. Commitments from outstanding players help convince others that the success is no fluke. On Friday Vandy gained a verbal from the top wide receiver prospect in the state of Tennessee, Camron Johnson, a consensus 4-star prospect.
Like many other heavily recruited prospects, Johnson announced his intentions in a Twitter message writing, "There's no place like home!.. I will be attending Vanderbilt University to continue my education and my football career!" He also thanked his coaches, teammates, family, and others for their support during the recruiting process.
His commit is a big one but what is really special is that his fellow Commodore commits are also highly regarded. These are uncharted waters for Vandy. Yes, James Franklin was a relentless recruiter but these first eight 2018 Vanderbilt commits all have multiple power-5 offers and each is rated at 4-stars by at least one service. If this trend continues this will certainly be Vandy's best recruiting class ever.
Johnson is a full package wide receiver. He can make the tough catches and is a threat to take it to the house after a catch with his running ability. VandyMania asked Johnson back in February what he believed made him a great player. His reply was, "I think just my ability to make people miss in the open space and break tackles and also just that I can catch almost every ball that comes my way."
Playing for Brentwood Academy in the ultra tough Division II-AA in 2016, Johnson was one of seven Brentwood Academy players to earn All-State honors. The Eagles have won back-to-back state championships the past two seasons and Johnson had a lot to do with that including making several difficult receptions in the championship game in 2016.
Power-5 schools were lined up to gain Johnson's services. In addition to Vandy, LSU, Tennessee, Kentucky, Purdue, Ole Miss, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Illinois and Indiana all offered.
No one knows what other players will make Vanderbilt their pick between now and February 2018, but the fact is this recruiting crop is off to a super start.
