The Vanderbilt Commodores host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday morning at Vanderbilt Stadium. Here are your three keys to a Commodores victory.
1) WHITE SWARMED BY BLACK DEATH DEFENSE
Mike White is one of the top quarterbacks in college football. White has thrown for 2,328 yards while completing 214 of 327 passes for 14 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Against Old Dominion he had five touchdown passes to different receivers. For his career White has 9,413 yards for 62 touchdowns. The Commodores will need a team defensive effort to stop White. They've got to get pressure on him and get some sacks, cover his receivers and force him to make throws for short gains or losses.
2) SHURMUR HAS A CAREER DAY PASSING
Kyle Shurmur is a weapon and the Commodores need to utilize him. WKU gives up almost 310 yards passing a game. This coming against opponents like Illinois (2-6), Eastern Kentucky, UTEP (0-8), Charlotte (1-7) and ODU (2-6). Shurmur is showing that he has NFL potential. The Commodores need to utilize him and his solid group of receivers to overwhelm the Hilltoppers.
3) DOMINATE FROM START TO FINISH
While White is a great quarterback, that is about where it ends for WKU. They have played a very weak schedule with only one contest so far against a team with a winning record (Florida Atlantic). Vandy has had a very tough road the past few games. The Commodores need to come out strong and dominate from start to finish and put that ugly streak in their rear-view mirror. VU needs to show that while they have had a rough stretch, they are still an SEC team and can still squash a team like Western Kentucky like a bug.
Saturday's game kicks off at 11 a.m. CT and can be seen on ESPNU.
